Data quality continues to be a major roadblock to generative AI (GenAI) adoption, according to Informatica’s CDO Insights 2024: Charting a Course to AI Readiness report.
The report based on 600 enterprise chief data officers and other data decision-makers revealed that GenAI adoption is already underway in the region, with Korea (64%) and India (75%) already incorporating generative AI in their business operations.
However, nearly all APAC respondents have encountered roadblocks when adopting generative AI. AI ethics (42%) and data privacy & protection (42%) as their main obstacles.
“Unsurprisingly, generative AI implementation and the data strategies needed to do so successfully continue to dominate bandwidth for most data leaders, regardless of region or vertical,” said Jitesh Ghai, chief product officer at Informatica.
Data fragmentation and complexity
More than half (56%) of APAC data leaders struggle to balance 1,000-plus data sources in their organisation, 78% of APAC data leaders expect the number of data sources will increase in 2024, and 60% of APAC leaders say they’ll need five or more data management tools to support their priorities and manage their data estates, an increase from 2023 (55%).
Data readiness and GenAI investment
Nearly half (45%) of APAC data leaders reported that improving data readiness for AI and analytics is the most common metric to measure data strategy effectiveness.
The top data strategy priorities in 2024 for APAC data leaders are reliability and consistency of data delivery fit for generative AI (40%) and improving data governance over data and processes (40%).
To support these priorities, APAC leaders to invest in data management capabilities such as data privacy and protection (45%), data quality and observability (42%), and data integration and engineering (40%).
